The studio began it's life in 1944 as a farmbuilding, specifically
a chicken house. I'm pretty sure when my grandfather built it, he had no idea it would one day be turned into an art
studio....and neither did I years later as a kid helping him gather eggs. I guess I couldn't see beyond
the chickens trying to peck my shoes.
In 2006 I decided I'd outgrown the studio in my house (ie, the
corner of a spare bedroom) and decided to turn the chicken house into a studio. Around the same time I was accepted
onto the Chatham Studio Tour and only had a few months to get the renovations done ( I wouldn't recommend applying to
a studio tour if you don't have a studio). Luckily (and just barely) it was ready in time for its first event.
It was stressful but a lot of fun to see the chicken house transform into a studio and gallery space.......and
I don't have to worry about chickens attacking my feet anymore.
